Have you ever thought of receiving a coverage and faced difficulties while in deep remote locations in India like deserts of White Rann of Gujarat , Thar desert in Rajasthan or Himalayas and so on and so forth in Arizona. Remote locations all over the globe getting internet with high speeds and low latency is a great idea. I believe Musk is coming with a revolutionizing rural internet outreach. I am quite impressed with the technology that Starlink is bringing in. Even though in India it has yet acquire license but I believe its a great idea to connect the remote areas all over the globe just by fixing a antenna at the top of your house and connect it with a router at your home.
Based on the costing structure as of now it seems to be little costly because it gets us to buy the devices to be installed in your home with an antenna. I am not here to discuss certain technical details of it but just to discuss about the business prospects and technological revolution it brings in. The cost of deploying the constellation of satellites is estimated around 10 billion USD. As far as I see it there are also concerns by astronomical fraternity that the constellation will jam the orbits which is already overflowing with thousands of satellites. As of Jan 2021 there are 3372 satellites in the orbit. In future, there might be a grave concern for space debris after the life of satellites gets to an end. To resolve this aspect Stralink redesigned their satellites with Hall thrusters which eventually brings them down at the near end of their life. The company has stated that these capital would be used to fund SpaceX's mars program.
Here's something about its competition:
In addition to the OneWeb constellation, announced nearly concurrently with the SpaceX constellation, a 2015 proposal from Samsung outlined a 4,600-satellite constellation orbiting at 1,400 km (870 mi) that could provide a zettabyte per month capacity worldwide, an equivalent of 200 gigabytes per month for 5 billion users of Internet data, but by 2020, no more public information had been released about the Samsung constellation. Telesat announced a smaller 117 satellite constellation in 2015 with plans to deliver initial service in 2021. Amazon announced a large broadband internet satellite constellation in April 2019, planning to launch 3,236 satellites in the next decade in what the company calls "Project Kuiper", a satellite constellation that will work in concert with Amazon's previously announced large network of twelve satellite ground station facilities (the "AWS ground station unit") announced in November 2018.
I never knew about a concept called Light pollution it exists ! The pollution is being vetted out by astronomical fraternity stating that it might hamper their astronomical observations. Astronomers claim that the number of visible satellites will outnumber visible stars and that their brightness in both optical and radio wavelengths will severely impact scientific observations. Because the Starlink satellites can autonomously change their orbits, observations cannot be scheduled to avoid them.
Users can expect to see download speeds between 100 Mb/s and 200 Mb/s and latency as low as 20ms in most locations and this is commendable !
Impact of weather :
I just thought about it what if there are heavy rain conditions or snow buildup condition over your antenna. How about that ? That is definitely going to impact your speed and serviceability of the service.
Are you a Star gazing fan ?
Well! the International Astronomical Union released an alarm-sounding statement warning of unforeseen consequences for stargazing and for the protection of nocturnal wildlife.

The greater concern for many people is how all these transmissions and an ever-increasing number of satellites going up will impact life on earth.
ReplyDeleteThat is a true concern. the debris on the atmosphere and what if it falls on the surface? Its a big no no for the star gazing fans as well!
