GRE -ARGUMENT PRACTISE

The following appeared in the editorial column of the Fern County Gazettenewspaper:
"The Fern County Council made the right decision when it unanimously voted to convert the Northside branch of the county library system into a computer-skills training facility for public use. The converted facility will fill what is certain, based on national trends, to be a growing need among county residents for training in computer skills. And since our library system boasts more volumes per resident than any other system in the state, the remaining branches will adequately serve the future needs of Fern County residents."
Discuss what evidence you would need to properly evaluate the argument, and explain how that evidence might strengthen or weaken the argument.

solution:

The argument is all about Fern County Council that made its decision to convert a Northside library system into computer training system. The author of the argument states that the decision taken was the right decision in accordance with the need of the hour and also a part of national trend. Moreover the author states that there are many other library systems to serve the residents there. However when more light is shed on the issue and more detailed facts are concerned,it is easy to see that the argument suffers certain fallacies in assumptions  as well as commits to false analogy that needs to be considered.

The author states that the decision was taken by voting and everybody "unanimously" voted for the conversion of library system into computer training facility. Of-course the choice made was beneficial but many other issues are needed to be mentioned for the argument here. Council voted unanimously but there has been no mention of any figures or facts, proofs to support the decision. Just if council wishes and everybody implements must not be the case. It has been mentioned that its an national trend hence it was widely accepted. Though there has been no mention that whether there is any interest among computers in that particular area though its an national trend.

There has been no mention about any demographic division and occupational details of the people of county which may have affected the decision. It states that after close down of library system there are many other branches to serve the residents. It may be possible that major part of population may be using  this system as it is more nearer to them and later after conversion people find it difficult to switch down to other library system. Books are an important physical assets which cant be ignored.Instead of closing down the library system a new computer training system must be developed rather then removing it as both are important aspects of education may it be E-education or regular study.

Hence, analyzing the arguments key information is missing which supports the decision. A lot more work is needed to make the argument more cogent and logical so conclusion taken for converting the library system into computer training center is little weird without strong support of proofs.
